**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, facing the unknown felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, hurdles, and unforgettable moments, I can assert that it was a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may be feeling similar apprehensions. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to share that I’ve made some of the best friends I could have hoped for.

The pivotal moment arrived when I made the choice to step outside my comfort zone and strike up casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same scenarios. Gradually, those initial exchanges evolved into substantial friendships. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all beginning with that first courageous step.

What have I learned? It’s essential to take that initial plunge, even if it seems intimidating. If you don’t feel equipped right away, fret not—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, remain authentic. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and ideals.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the increased demands and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing peers who appear to be managing effortlessly.

What assisted me in navigating this transition was recognizing that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, chances are others are facing the same difficulties. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This simple act of reaching out can greatly alter your experience.

### Support from the Materials Department

Regarding faculty, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the Materials Science department truly is. The staff genuinely care about student success and are consistently understanding of the various challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge lasting connections with the staff. This role provided me with essential insights and helped me realize their approachability and willingness to support students.

What’s my main takeaway? Make the most out of the resources and support systems available to you. Whether it’s for academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply getting acquainted with your lecturers, remember that there’s no limit to the support you can receive.

### Key Takeaways

In hindsight, this year has taught me that the anxieties I felt—both leading up to university and throughout the year—were often misplaced. With the ample support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone.

Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while relishing the university experience. It’s been a year characterized by growth, resilience, and enjoyment, and I’m eager to see what the future brings.

If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, keep this in mind: take that leap, don’t hesitate to seek help, and fully embrace the journey. You’ll be astonished at the extent of your growth in just one year.
