**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new phase of life was intimidating. Now, upon reflection, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what has this year taught me, and what is my current position?
### The Difficulty of Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was the worry of finding friends. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to now, and I can say with certainty that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with simple conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that it’s always worthwhile to take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, I learned that the best version of yourself is simply being you. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those you connect with.
### Juggling the Workload
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant difference from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more striking. Being thrust into such a setting can negatively affect your self-esteem, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most crucial lesson from my first year—seek assistance from your fellow students or the faculty without hesitation.
### Assistance from the Staff
Speaking of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The staff genuinely want to see you succeed, and they comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They’re compassionate and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support provided until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me become more acquainted with the staff, which has proven to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My main takeaway here is to make the most of the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. The extensive support provided by both faculty and fellow students has been invaluable. I’ve discerned that I am never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
