**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly in my nature, given my previously shy and reserved demeanor. Now, as I reflect, I realize this past year has been a journey of personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyable moments! But what insights did I gain from this experience, and what is my current situation?
### Making Connections: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Experience
One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I have made some truly amazing friends. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others who were navigating the same situation.
So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that initial plunge at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter others who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Demands and Challenges
Another major obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s simple to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study, but remember: everyone shares that experience. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are grappling with the same confusion. The crucial aspect is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson I grasped during my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty.
### The Supportive Faculty: An Essential Resource
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral resources available until late in the year, and I wish I had utilized them sooner.
At the year’s onset, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to better connect with the staff, which was invaluable. There are various ways to build relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My primary takeaway? Embrace the help and support provided to you—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has taught me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was often unfounded. With the abundance of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I quickly came to understand that I was never isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress from examinations and deadlines while still enjoying life, and I’ve developed in ways I never anticipated.
