**Looking Back on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to begin my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, the prospect of immersing myself in university life felt intimidating. However, reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period rich with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Hurdle

One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the full day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can state with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, both within my academic program and beyond.

What did I discover? The essential step is to take that initial plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, remember—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events aimed at connecting you with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With a diverse range of people at the university, you will surely encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Workload

Adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material was another significant challenge. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing others engaging in intense study sessions.

But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same waters. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely that others are facing similar difficulties. The most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from friends or faculty, don’t shy away from reaching out when you require support.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always receptive to our concerns.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Make the most of every support resource available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Concluding Reflections

As I look back on my first year, I’ve realized that many of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were misplaced. The support provided by both academic staff and fellow students is tremendous, ensuring that there is always someone available to help during challenging times. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines while fully enjoying the university experience.

To anyone embarking on their journey soon, keep this in mind: you’re never isolated, and there is always help accessible whenever you need it.
