**Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. As a person who had always been somewhat introverted, venturing into the unknown felt new and unsettling. Reflecting on this past year now, I recognize it as a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?

### Building Friendships: The First Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s official start, I spent the whole day in my room, intimidated and reluctant to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can affirm that I’ve made some of my closest friends ever. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar situations.

So, what have I discovered? I realized it is always worthwhile to take that first step. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to help you engage with others. Most critically, just be authentic. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find companions who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Workload

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the escalated complexity of the material. There was undeniably a jump from A-levels, with an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can shake your confidence, particularly when you notice others studying and feel you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same waters. If something puzzles you, it’s likely that others are equally bewildered.

The main takeaway? Seek assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or consulting the staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Significance of Staff Support

Speaking of personnel, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year to tackle any difficulties we may face. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had tapped into it sooner.

At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are ample opportunities to forge relationships with the faculty, and I strongly encourage you to seize them. My most significant takeaway here is to utilize all the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before commencing university, and even throughout the year, was largely unwarranted. An array of support systems exists, including staff and fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines, and I’ve emerged from this year feeling more self-assured and capable than ever.
