**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what exactly have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Connections: Conquering the Initial Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered early in my journey was building friendships. This often becomes one of the most intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just a few days before classes started—I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all began with brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as me. The crucial lesson I took away? Take that risk early on. Even if you do not feel prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be countless ice-breaking sessions and events aimed at helping you connect with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Handling the Workload: A Steep Learning Journey
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a palpable leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The most critical lesson I absorbed in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hold back from reaching out when you require support.
### Assistance from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Connect
On the topic of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been remarkable. The professors and tutors genuinely desire your success and acknowledge that students encounter hurdles. They maintain regular communication with us throughout the year and consistently show empathy toward our struggles.
I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until the year was nearly over, and I regret not doing so earlier. One significant step I took at the beginning of the year was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect more with the staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with faculty, and it is one of the most rewarding steps you can take for yourself. My takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and support available—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Adventure
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during my time here—was often unwarranted. There are numerous support networks available, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you are never truly isolated. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while also relishing the university experience.
So, if you are about to commence your own university adventure, remember: take that leap, ask for help, and be your authentic self. You’ve got this!
