**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of considerable personal development, challenges, and ample enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Making Friends: The Primary Challenge
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assure you that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals who were navigating a similar journey.
So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t initially feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a rich diversity of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
### Managing the Workload
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a clear jump from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your skills when witnessing others studying rigorously. However, one thing that supported me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If something confounds you, it’s almost a certainty that others are grappling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is possibly the most important lesson I took from my first year: seek support readily, whether it be from your peers or the faculty.
### Encouragement from the Staff
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is extraordinary. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish to see you thrive and recognize the hurdles students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until late in the year, and I wish I had leveraged them sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty more intimately, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the greatest actions you can take for your benefit. My key takeaway is to fully embrace the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxious feelings I experienced before and during university were largely misplaced. With an extensive variety of support options offered by both the faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions can be eased. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to harmonize having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
