**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. As a first-year student about to begin my adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, I was venturing into uncharted territory. For someone who has always been introverted, this was a significant step. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it has been one of personal growth, obstacles, and abundant happiness. But what insights have I gained, and how has this year shaped me?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered when starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. It all began with small gestures, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new and apprehensive.
So, what lessons did I glean? I discovered that taking a courageous step early on is beneficial. If you’re not ready to jump in immediately, that’s okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the intricacies of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was quite significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you’re keeping pace.
What aided me during these trying times was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If you’re perplexed by a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructional staff. This became one of the most vital lessons from my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
Speaking of assistance, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are well-aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and expressed empathy towards our challenges.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. Cultivating these relationships proved invaluable, and there are ample opportunities to engage with the staff if you are proactive. My principal takeaway from this experience is to leverage the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. Numerous resources and support systems are established to help students tackle challenges, whether they be academic or social.
This year has taught me that I am never completely alone and that it’s feasible to discover joy even amidst the stresses of examinations and deadlines. It has been a year of development, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my journey at Imperial.
