**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who once possessed a shy and quiet demeanor, stepping into the unfamiliar felt like a formidable task. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, fresh challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I view myself today?
### Conquering the Challenge of Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of entering university was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may share these feelings. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my academic program and beyond.
What assisted me in achieving this? Taking that initial step. Starting casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances made a significant impact. If you’re not prepared to jump right in, don’t fret—there are various icebreakers and events created to facilitate connections with others. The most essential insight I gained is to simply remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges proved to be another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the jump from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted or question your capabilities, particularly when you compare yourself to your peers.
What carried me through those bouts of insecurity was the realization that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re finding something hard to comprehend, it’s likely others are grappling with it as well. The secret is to reach out for assistance—be it from your classmates or the educators. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Supportive Team in Materials
Speaking of educators, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire your success and are understanding of the hurdles students encounter. They promote open communication throughout the year and are always available to assist.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought help earlier. At the beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to form connections with staff. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unmerited. With a wealth of support from both staff and peers, I learned that I was never truly isolated. More crucially, I discovered how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still finding time for enjoyment and fun.
As I contemplate my first year, I recognize the extent of my growth and the distance I’ve traveled. For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, remember that it’s completely normal to feel apprehensive. Embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and know that support is always at hand.
