**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quite introverted, leaping into such an unfamiliar and demanding setting was nerve-racking. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate. I certainly felt that way. On my initial day in student housing, I stayed hidden in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
These bonds didn’t materialize instantly, but began with small interactions—casual chats with others who were equally new and unsure. Gradually, these relationships evolved into a second family during my time at Imperial. My key takeaway? Take that leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready right off the bat, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. Given the diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Facing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university posed another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was tough, and transitioning from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to be overwhelmed or doubt your abilities, especially when it appears others are thriving.
What benefited me the most was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to reach out for support is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to address our worries.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one leap I took at the year’s start, and it turned out to be a splendid choice. It enabled me to nurture relationships with faculty, which was invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend making the most of these opportunities. The assistance they provide can greatly impact your experience.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my journey, this year has imparted so much knowledge. I discovered that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the vast support accessible from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a journey filled with growth, resilience, and newfound understanding. If you’re set to embark on a similar journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. Take those small steps, welcome the support around you, and above all, savor the experience.
