**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a blend of nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, diving into the unknown was quite outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what exactly did I gain from this experience, and what is my current state?
### Making Friends: Taking the Plunge
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings of anxiety. During my first day of moving into student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with those who were experiencing the same challenges.
So, what did I discover? The vital lesson was to take the plunge at the start of the year. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be plenty of ice-breaking activities and chances to socialize. And keep in mind, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Workload: Seeking Assistance
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper leap between the first and second terms. Being thrust into this setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year—whether you’re reaching out to classmates or contacting faculty.
### Support from Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Reach Out
When it comes to faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely aim to help students thrive and fully understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication, listening to our concerns and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to engage with the faculty on a more personal level, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the help and support that is available to you—you can never have too much!
### Final Reflections: Embracing the Experience
In conclusion, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely unfounded. With the vast array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone. More importantly, I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while also managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
