**Reflections on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and an abundance of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day at student accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly assert I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. My fellow students have become like a second family, both within my course and throughout the university.
What aided me? Taking that first step. Initiating conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances made a significant impact. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. The principal lesson I gleaned is to remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities of the coursework was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others study and pondering if you’re keeping pace.
What helped me through those moments of insecurity was the understanding that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with a concept, odds are others are facing similar difficulties. The most vital skill I honed during my initial year was the ability to seek help. Whether it means reaching out to classmates or consulting with staff, asking for assistance is crucial.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to address our issues.
While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered to me until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable asset. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage capitalizing on these opportunities. My most significant takeaway? Never shy away from utilizing the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive assistance.
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support options accessible from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
If I could provide one piece of counsel to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the obstacles, take leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to seek help. University is a phase of growth, and you’ll find that the support and friendships you cultivate along the way will be transformative.
