**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was set to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been more reserved and introspective, diving into this new world was quite intimidating. Reflecting back now, I can see a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can affirmatively state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family within Imperial, which all began with light conversations with peers who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I discover? I learned that taking that first step is vital. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with new individuals will arise. Above all, just be yourself. With a diverse array of personalities throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find kindred spirits.

### Confronting the Workload

Another significant challenge I had to face was getting used to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others diligently studying while you feel as though you’re lagging.

However, here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If something isn’t clear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The pivotal lesson I took away from my first year was the value of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Significance of Support

Speaking of faculty, the professors within the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a chance and became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with the faculty, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are countless support networks available, from staff to fellow students, that can help you tackle the obstacles. I’ve realized that I’m never truly on my own, and I’ve learned how to enjoy myself while managing the inevitable pressures of examinations and deadlines.
