**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my voyage as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging headfirst into this new phase was an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, hurdles, and ample enjoyment, I can assertively say it’s been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gathered, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making
One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, it might be a concern for you as well. I distinctly recall my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to report I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment came when I resolved to venture beyond my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with others who were just as inexperienced and anxious as I was. Gradually, these exchanges flourished into profound friendships, and I now feel as if I have unearthed a second family here at Imperial. My key lesson? Make that leap early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be various icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Above all, be yourself—Imperial hosts a diverse community, and you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Trials
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What assisted me in navigating this was acknowledging that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty members. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Concerning support, the staff in the Materials department has been remarkable. They sincerely wish for student success and are understanding about the challenges we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication and are always ready to listen to and address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best decisions I made was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official roles or casual encounters, familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most advantageous actions you can take. My suggestion? Fully utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve come to understand that the anxieties and concerns I harbored—both prior to and during university—were often baseless. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I’ve realized I’m never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines while relishing moments of joy and fun.
As I get ready for the upcoming chapter of my university experience, I feel considerably more confident and eager for what is to come. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: tackle the challenges head-on, seek support when needed, and don’t forget to savor the journey!
