**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who used to be shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this aspect causes considerable anxiety about starting university, and I certainly shared this concern. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent a whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.

What have I discovered? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worth it. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I learned the importance of being true to myself. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the demands and complexity of the coursework was another key obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and thriving.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, there’s a good chance others are feeling the same way. The crucial part is to seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year—whether it’s requesting help from your classmates or reaching out to faculty members.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They are genuinely invested in student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and offered a variety of support.

I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support that was available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My most significant takeaway? Never hesitate to leverage the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have an excess of assistance.

### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently misplaced. There are numerous support structures in place, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

To anyone about to embark on their university path: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and do not hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll evolve in ways you never anticipated.
