**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and a sense of the unknown about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted, immersing myself in such a new environment was a formidable challenge. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was meeting new people. Beginning university often feels overwhelming, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely one of your main worries as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve made some incredible friends throughout this journey. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some light conversation with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you aren’t feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I discovered the significance of simply being myself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly noticeable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. Being placed in such an environment can certainly shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging. However, here’s the truth: everyone is navigating these challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are in the same position.

The most vital lesson I garnered in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, do not hesitate to reach out for help. Asking for assistance is essential, and it can truly make a difference.

### Backing from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the educators in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it sooner.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to build stronger connections with the staff, which was immensely beneficial. There are various ways to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so can be one of the most advantageous choices you can make for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully leverage the support accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Remarks

Ultimately, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my time at university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely solitary. I’ve acquired the ability to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines, and I’ve grown increasingly self-assured throughout the process.
