**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what awaited me. I was about to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience felt like a significant challenge. Now, as I look back on an academic year filled with progress, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can contemplate what I’ve absorbed and where I currently find myself.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Entering university can feel tremendous, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your major apprehensions as well. On my first day in student housing—just days before the term commenced—I devoted the whole day to secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have transformed into my second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual chats with fellow students who were experiencing similar situations.

What did I learn? Taking that first step to engage with others is essential. If you initially feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and occasions to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge involved acclimating to the demands and heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Navigating such a rigorous academic landscape can occasionally shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me through this experience was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance that your peers are grappling with it as well. The important thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to request support is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the obstacles students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were consistently available to address our inquiries.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had done so sooner. At the year’s outset, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources provided—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. There’s an abundance of support available from both faculty and fellow students, and you are never genuinely alone when confronting difficulties.

This year has taught me how to juggle the stress generated by exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. It has illustrated the importance of taking risks, seeking help, and welcoming the opportunities that arise.

As I advance, I look forward to discovering what the next chapter has in store, and I am thankful for the growth and experiences that this first year has afforded me.
