### Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in a mix of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was preparing to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been introverted and contemplative, venturing into the unknown was not something I was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

Creating friendships was one of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, mere days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to step out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve met here have become like a second family to me. It simply required me to venture beyond my comfort zone and initiate small dialogues with others who were equally new to the setting.

So, what was my takeaway? Making that initial leap of faith at the year’s onset is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With the diversity of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Struggles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The difference between A-levels and university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more overwhelming. Maintaining assurance wasn’t always simple, particularly when I noticed others studying and felt as though I was falling behind.

What got me through these tough moments was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar difficulties. If I found something puzzling, it was likely that others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty, asking for help is crucial.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how fantastic the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and showed understanding of our challenges.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I did take a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be tremendously helpful. There are various ways to build connections with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My advice? Fully embrace the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, it has become clear to me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous support systems in place, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges.

I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance having fun with managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.

As I look ahead, I’m enthusiastic about what the next year will bring. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, understand that it’s normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you have the ability to overcome those feelings and flourish in this new chapter of your life.
