**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been somewhat timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what have I truly learned, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings of anxiety. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an additional family.

So, what did I come to realize? I understood that taking that first step is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be your authentic self. With such a varied group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to discover those who connect with you.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another notable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more taxing. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others diligently studying and seemingly understanding everything. However, here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something doesn’t click, it’s likely that others share that sentiment. The secret lies in seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This may be the most critical lesson I uncovered in my first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the backing from the Materials Science department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we might have. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become better acquainted with the staff, which proved to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway is to fully utilize the support that is at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Reflections

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With the diverse range of support options offered by both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never genuinely alone. I also discovered how to balance enjoying my time at university with managing the unavoidable pressures from examinations and deadlines.

Looking back, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, and I’m eager for what the future has in store.
