**Thoughts on My Initial Year Pursuing Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this major life transition felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you’re contemplating enrolling, this might be a concern for you too. On my inaugural day at student housing—just a few days shy of the term beginning—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
These connections didn’t blossom instantly, but they began with small actions, such as engaging in lighthearted conversations with others who were just as unfamiliar with the experience as I was. Gradually, these interactions developed into a supportive community here at Imperial. What did I take away from this? Taking that first bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others. Above all, I discovered the importance of being my authentic self. With such a diverse crowd at university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another significant challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second proved to be even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and assuming they have everything under control.
What assisted me during these moments was the awareness that we’re all facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that others are grappling with it as well. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to request help is potentially the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of staff, I cannot express enough how incredible the Materials Science team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and offered support whenever necessary.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold choices I made early on, and it proved to be very rewarding. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which were invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to interact with staff, and taking advantage of these can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support systems around you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has illustrated to me that much of the anxiety I experienced before university—and throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the plethora of support resources available from both staff and peers, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned to manage stressors such as exams and deadlines while also carving out time for joy and fun.
Looking back, I feel grateful for the personal growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve built. If you’re about to begin your university journey, remember that it’s completely normal to feel anxious. Take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You may be pleasantly surprised by how much you can accomplish.
