**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and timid, immersing myself in this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assertively say it’s been a life-changing journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is one of the primary worries about commencing university, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.
The decisive moment came when I compelled myself to engage in small talk with others who were equally apprehensive. Those early exchanges flourished into friendships that now resemble a second family. My biggest lesson? Take that initial step of courage early on. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, just be authentic. With such a multicultural community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demands and heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was quite substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even steeper. It’s easy to become burdened or doubt your capabilities when you observe peers studying and question your own progress.
What benefited me the most was reminding myself that we are all in this together. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The secret lies in reaching out for assistance—whether it be from classmates or instructors. Learning to seek help is likely the most significant takeaway I gained from my first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept transparent communication with us and addressed our issues.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this last year, I’ve come to understand that the trepidation I experienced before starting university—and even during it—was often unfounded. There is an abundance of support options accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in navigating the hurdles.
This year has illuminated that I’m never genuinely alone. It’s taught me how to balance pressures like exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun. Most importantly, it has been a year of personal development, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead.
