**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new experience felt intimidating. Now, as I look back on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what did I take away from this experience, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, all starting from a few straightforward conversations with peers who were in the same situation as me.

So, what did I discover? I came to understand that taking that first step—regardless of how frightening—was essential. If you’re not ready to leap in straight away, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events and avenues to connect with others. And above all, always be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the escalated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities, especially when observing peers studying fervently. However, one aspect that enabled me to persevere was realizing that everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are as well.

The most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or teaching staff, do not hesitate to reach out. Everyone is there to help you, and requesting help is a display of strength, not frailty.

### Faculty Support

On the topic of support, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They earnestly desire students to thrive and recognize the hurdles we encounter. The faculty maintains clear lines of communication with students throughout the academic year, addressing any issues we may have. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the year’s start, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with your professors and lecturers, and doing so can transform your university experience. My key takeaway here: capitalize on the support available to you. You can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive range of support options from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve uncovered the ability to enjoy university life while managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
