**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I got ready to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my introverted and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when beginning university. On my first day in the student dormitory, right before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever known. My classmates have become a second family to me, both in the university environment and my academic program.

What contributed to my success in this area? Taking that first step of courage. Initiating dialogues with others who were in similar circumstances was all it took to establish genuine connections. If you’re feeling apprehensive about this, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and occasions to connect with people. My biggest lesson? Just be yourself. With such a broad array of individuals at university, you’re certain to encounter those who align with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the workload and academic demands was yet another substantial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the initial term to the second one felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated and question your capabilities when witnessing others apparently thriving. However, I discovered that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too.

What’s the secret to overcoming this? Seek assistance. This is perhaps the most critical takeaway from my first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your fellow students and, crucially, to the faculty.

### The Supportive Faculty in Materials

The faculty in the Materials department have been extraordinary. They genuinely want students to succeed and understand the difficulties we face. Throughout the academic year, they maintained accessible communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

I didn’t leverage the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I now realize I should have done so much earlier. Taking the initiative to become a year well-being representative was a significant risk for me, yet it turned out to be one of the finest decisions I made. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved exceptionally beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt preceding and during university was mostly unfounded. With the abundant support from both the faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Looking back, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. The obstacles I faced have fostered my growth, and the bonds I’ve created have rendered this journey remarkable. To anyone about to begin their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the support that surrounds you, and believe that you will find your place.
