**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of embarking on my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt like a colossal challenge. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and enjoyable moments, I recognize just how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term began, I found myself spending the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment came when I opted to take a chance and initiate casual conversations with others who were equally new to this experience. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my academic program and across the broader university community. My most significant takeaway? Be authentic and take that first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet others. With such a varied community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level studies was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others around you seemingly flourishing.

What helped me the most was recognizing that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential step is to reach out for help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been fantastic. They truly want students to succeed and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing support.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative at the beginning of the year was one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are many avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can dramatically enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Embrace the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

This year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also making time for joy and fun.

Looking back, I can see the significant growth I’ve achieved, both personally and academically. Beginning university may feel like a daunting leap into the unknown, but it’s a leap well worth taking.
