**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of nervousness, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, taking the plunge into such a significant transition was frightening. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time rich in growth, obstacles, and ample happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the quest for friendship. Starting university can elicit a whirlwind of nerves, and for many new students, this often ranks as a primary worry. On my initial day in student housing, mere days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained cooped up in my room the whole day, too anxious to venture out and mingle with others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share in my journey and uplift me. All it took was engaging in a little small talk with others equally eager to connect.

The most significant lesson I picked up? Embrace that leap early on in the academic year. Even if you’re not feeling ready or at ease, there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you will undoubtedly find like-minded individuals.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another challenge I faced was adapting to the heavier workload and the increased complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when you observe peers studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.

What proved most beneficial was the realization that everyone is navigating similar difficulties. If you find a concept confusing, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This ability to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill to hone in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel are genuinely invested in student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year and are always willing to assist.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken more advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

### Concluding Reflections

Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unfounded. A vast array of support is available, from both faculty and fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone and that enjoying the university experience is entirely possible, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.

This journey has been one of self-discovery, and I look forward with excitement to what the next chapter will bring.
