**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As a naturally shy and reserved individual, diving into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and abundant enjoyment, I can truly appreciate how transformative this experience has been. So, what insights have I gathered, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s outset was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this can be a top source of stress. I vividly recall my first day in student accommodation, where I found myself cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I proudly acknowledge that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—bonds that feel like a second family.
What facilitated this? Taking that crucial first step. Even if you aren’t quite ready to leap immediately, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others in similar circumstances abound. The key takeaway for me was to simply be yourself. With such a wide array of individuals at university, you are sure to connect with those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was yet another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by peers who appear to have everything under control.
What propelled me forward was the understanding that everyone faces similar situations. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether it comes from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
On the topic of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and always show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, proving to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best favors you can do for yourself. My major takeaway? Don’t hold back from taking advantage of the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to commencing university and during my first term—was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support available from faculty and fellow students, I discovered I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I learned how to juggle the challenges of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I’m thankful for the hurdles and development I’ve undergone. To anyone on the verge of starting their university adventure, my counsel is straightforward: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’re capable of conquering this!
