**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been timid and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, as I contemplate the previous academic year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a new student reading this, you might relate to these feelings. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These connections didn’t happen all at once; they began with small actions—casual talks with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these bonds developed into a second family at Imperial. My main takeaway? Take risks early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect await you. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse pool of people at the university, you’re sure to find your community.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more intense. It’s easy to feel swamped or to doubt your capabilities, especially as you observe others around you appearing to excel.

What was most beneficial for me was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was navigating similar challenges, and if you’re grappling with a concept, rest assured others are as well. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the team in the Materials Science department is remarkable. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and show compassion regarding the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members and gain insight into the resources available for students. Whether through formal roles or casual chats, building relationships with the staff is priceless. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve gained invaluable lessons. I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support options provided by both faculty and fellow students, assistance is always within reach. I’ve also discovered that I am never genuinely alone, and it is entirely possible to relish university life, even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience. It has been a path of growth, resilience, and exploration, and I am eager to embrace what the next chapter brings.
