**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was preparing to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been shy and introverted, plunging into the unknown felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that was not only challenging but also transformative, marked by personal growth, fresh experiences, and an abundance of fun. So, what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. The start of university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely one of your greatest worries too. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours secluded in my room, far too anxious to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The breakthrough came from taking that initial step—engaging in small talk with others who were in the same situation. Over time, those interactions blossomed into significant friendships, and I discovered a second family at Imperial. My suggestion? Take the plunge early. Even if you don’t feel ready or comfortable, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to bond with other students. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who share your passions and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another crucial challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The change from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers. However, I discovered a vital truth: everyone is experiencing a similar journey.
If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your instructors. This was arguably the most valuable skill I acquired during my initial year.
### The Encouraging Staff
Speaking of the staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel earnestly desire students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year, addressing our concerns and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support system until the later part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One bold step I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My most significant takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has revealed that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. With the extensive support options available from staff and fellow students, I realized I was never truly isolated. More importantly, I discovered how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, resilience, and exploration. If you’re about to embark on a similar journey, know that while obstacles are inevitable, the benefits are immensely rewarding. Take the daring step, seek help, and relish the experience—you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
