**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding the road ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I view it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment. But what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current position?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Challenge

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the quest to forge friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day moving into student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time cooped up in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family here at Imperial.

What did I take away from this experience? I came to understand that taking a risk at the outset of the year is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be ample ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Academic Load

Another major challenge was adapting to the demanding workload and the augmented complexity of the material. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and apparently thriving. However, one thing that motivated me to persist was the awareness that everyone else is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, chances are that others are grappling with it as well.

What’s the most crucial lesson here? Never hesitate to seek help. Whether from your fellow students or faculty, obtaining support is essential, especially during your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the teachers in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely strive for student success and are acutely aware of the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they kept in close contact with us, providing understanding and encouragement. I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier.

At the start of the year, I made a bold choice by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge closer connections with the faculty, which was invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Take full advantage of the support made available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support options provided by both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired skills to balance exam stress and deadlines with enjoyment, and I have developed in ways I never anticipated.
