### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, plunging into the vastness of university life felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what lessons have I gleaned from this journey, and where am I now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For many upcoming students, this is a primary concern at the start of university, and I was no different. On my initial day at the student accommodation, just prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most valuable friendships I could have hoped for.

At Imperial, I discovered a second family—friends who stood by me through all ups and downs. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and sparking conversations with others who were navigating the same experience. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is always rewarding. If you’re not quite ready to dive in right away, no need to fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, I learned to be authentic. With the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the demands and intensity of the academic workload was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities amidst such talented peers. However, what aided me was the understanding that we’re all experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are too.

The secret to tackling these hurdles is straightforward: seek help. This could be the most crucial skill to hone in your first year. Whether reaching out to fellow students or faculty, don’t hold back from asking for assistance.

#### Forming Bonds with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully benefit from the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which afforded me the chance to create connections with staff members. This proved to be an immensely valuable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key insight? Leverage the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!

#### Insights Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of my worries—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were largely unfounded. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I was never genuinely alone. This year taught me how to balance the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, university is a path of growth, and while the obstacles may initially appear overwhelming, they represent opportunities to learn and excel.
