**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being somewhat shy and introverted, the thought of immersing myself in this new phase was quite intimidating. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I can recognize how much I’ve evolved—both personally and academically. It has been a year brimming with challenges, self-exploration, and a considerable amount of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### The Challenge of Building Connections

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely that you’re anxious about it as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, mere days before the term commenced, I found myself spending the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were feeling just as I was.

So, what’s the lesson here? I realized that taking that initial step is essential, even if it feels unsettling. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I grasped that being authentic is vital. With the vast array of individuals at university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Workload

Adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the course material was another major challenge. There was indeed a significant increase compared to A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was particularly striking. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your skills when witnessing others study diligently. However, one reassuring thought that helped me was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same thing. The key takeaway from my first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

### Support from the Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the support from the Materials department has been phenomenal. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They maintain transparent communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any worries we might have. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold choice by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to become better acquainted with the faculty, which was extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to establish rapport with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway here is to maximize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. There is an abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students to assist you in overcoming any challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle having fun with the demands of exams and deadlines.
