**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who has always been introverted and timid, venturing into unfamiliar territory was not my usual approach. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize an academic term characterized by personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights has this year offered me, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Hurdle
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a future student reading this, chances are you are concerned about this aspect as well. On my first day of moving into housing, just prior to the start of the semester, I devoted the entire day to staying in my room, far too anxious to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life, both within this university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainty.
So, what have I gleaned from this? I have realized that it’s always beneficial to take that courageous first step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to interact with peers. Most importantly, I discovered that if you can embody one principle, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Confronting the Academic Load and Pressure
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and complexity of the subject matter. There was definitely a clear transition from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes undermine your self-assurance, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re falling behind. But here’s the truth: everyone is facing similar trials. If you don’t grasp a topic, it’s very likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t shy away from seeking assistance. This may have been the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—don’t hesitate to ask your peers and instructors when you require help.
### Assistance from the Faculty
This leads me to my next observation: the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept us well-informed about any concerns we were facing. Although I didn’t fully leverage the support services until the end of the year, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold choice by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to establish a closer relationship with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during my university experience was mostly baseless. With the abundant support offered by both faculty and fellow students, those sensations of anxiety can be effectively managed. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to find joy even amid the strains of exams and deadlines.
