**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved individual, the prospect of taking the plunge felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights did this year bring, and what position do I find myself in now?

### Building Friendships: The Initial Major Challenge

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might also find this to be a major concern. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, merely a few days before the term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all sparked by casual conversations and connecting with others who shared my situation.

What did I glean from this experience? The secret is to take that leap early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet fellow students. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of personalities and interests within the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals you resonate with.

### Managing the Workload and Academic Obstacles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexities of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even steeper jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and start to feel like you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I took away from my first year—reach out to your classmates and instructors when you require assistance.

### Guidance from Staff: An Essential Asset

Talking about support, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and tutors sincerely want you to thrive, and they recognize the challenges students encounter. They keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year, addressing any issues that arise. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to establish a better rapport with the staff, which was invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the resources available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support!

### Concluding Remarks

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the unease I experienced prior to and during university was largely excessive. With the broad range of support options accessible, from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines while also savoring university life. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that taking those initial steps—whether it’s connecting with others, asking for assistance, or becoming involved—can lead to some of the most fulfilling experiences.
