**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a naturally shy and introverted individual, immersing myself into this new stage of life was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons have I taken away from this experience, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Befriending Others

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you happen to be a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely that you share similar concerns. On the very first day I moved into my housing just days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were in the same situation as I was.

So, what insights have I gained? I discovered that taking the initial step is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to connect with new individuals. And, above all, stay true to yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more striking. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when observing peers studying intensely while you feel as if you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me during this time was the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential message here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or the academic staff, reaching out for help is arguably the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained continuous communication with us, addressing any concerns we encountered. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner.

At the beginning of the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect with the staff on a personal level, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My tip? Make the most of the support available. You can never have too much guidance!

### Concluding Thoughts

To sum up, this year has illuminated the fact that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone. More importantly, I’ve learned how to strike a balance between the demands of exams and deadlines while enjoying my time at university.
