**Reflections on My Inaugural Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment, I cannot help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and how much I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can be a lot to handle, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably something you’re concerned about as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and engaging in small talk with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties.

So, what did I learn? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you’re not quite ready or don’t feel at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just remain true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Managing the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and complexities of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more striking. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers seemingly thriving.

What aided me in navigating these difficulties was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to reach out for assistance is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Appreciating Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been nothing short of amazing. They genuinely care about our success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open and displayed empathy towards our challenges.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the plunge by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which provided me the chance to cultivate relationships with faculty members. This has proven to be immensely valuable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can significantly enhance your experience. My main takeaway here? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the trepidation I experienced—both before and during university—was often unwarranted. A wealth of support exists, from faculty to fellow students, and you’re never truly isolated in confronting challenges. I’ve also discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

This year has been one of profound personal development, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
