**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, plunging into this fresh chapter felt intimidating. Now, in retrospect, I perceive a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself at present?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of commencing university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with a few uncomplicated exchanges with others who were in a similar situation.
So, what have I learned? I found out that taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With a multitude of diverse individuals within the course and university, you’re destined to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the enhanced complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable leap from A-levels, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being immersed in such an environment can disrupt your self-esteem, especially when observing others study and beginning to question your own capabilities.
What aided me throughout this was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you struggle in understanding something, it’s likely others are grappling with the same issues. So, don’t hold back from seeking assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I acquired in my first year—reach out to your fellow students and faculty when you require help!
### The Significance of Staff Support
On the topic of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department personnel are. They sincerely wish for your success and are fully cognizant of the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us regarding any issues we were facing. I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I regret not utilizing it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway from this is to fully utilize the support you’re provided—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with having fun, and I’ve developed in ways I never anticipated.
