**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. However, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and countless enjoyable moments. But what specific lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student perusing this, it might be a source of concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s official start, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too frightened to step outside and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced, within my program and throughout the university.
The secret to cultivating these friendships was straightforward—initiating casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings. What did I discover? I discovered that making the effort at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly normal! There are ample ice-breaker activities and avenues to connect with others. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is the best strategy. With such a varied array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your passions and principles.
### Managing the Academic Workload
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more pronounced escalation from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence—you may observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What aided me during this period was the recognition that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are, others are struggling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or obtaining guidance from faculty, requesting help is essential.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The professors and tutors earnestly want you to thrive, and they comprehend the hurdles students face. They maintain open communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we might have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and fostering those relationships can significantly enhance your university experience. My principal takeaway here is to maximize the resources available to you—there’s never too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely exaggerated. Numerous support systems exist, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
