**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always identified as shy and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time filled with significant personal development, hurdles, and an abundance of enjoyment. So, what exactly have I discovered, and what is my current position?
### Making Connections: The Primary Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing elements of starting university was the prospect of forging friendships. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. I recall my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term. I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away from this? It’s essential to take that first step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another major challenge was adapting to the greater workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in that atmosphere, especially when observing others studying and beginning to question your own abilities.
What assisted me in coping with this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find a topic difficult, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance when you require it.
### Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the team in the Materials department is outstanding. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and fully cognizant of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I now wish I had sought it out sooner.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are various avenues to foster connections with staff, and doing so can be one of the most beneficial actions for yourself. My key message here is to make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Overall, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during my university experience was largely unnecessary. Numerous support structures exist, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those worries. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to find enjoyment even amidst the demands of exams and deadlines.
