**Reflections on My Initial Year in the Study of Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I set out on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an individual who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new chapter was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize just how life-changing this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern you share. On my first day in my student housing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.
What made the difference? It all began with small conversations and the realization that everyone else was in a similar situation, seeking connection. My key takeaway here is to take that initiative early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and chances to meet people. And just remember to be yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter others who share your passions and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level material was another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your abilities, particularly when you see your peers studying with confidence.
What aided me was the understanding that I wasn’t alone in this. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing the same difficulties. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty, seeking support can make a substantial difference.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely care about students’ success and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our queries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was an early leap I took, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. Building relationships with the staff is immensely beneficial, and there are many avenues to do so. My advice? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt, both prior to and during university, was often baseless. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned to juggle exam-related stress and deadlines while still finding moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I can see the tremendous growth I’ve experienced over the past year. From overcoming my initial fears to forming significant relationships and addressing academic challenges, this journey has been transformative. If you’re about to commence your own university experience, know that feeling nervous is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you have the ability to flourish.
