**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, the thought of immersing myself in university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Forming Friendships: A Formidable Yet Fulfilling Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing facets of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, it may be a concern that’s already weighing on you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term officially kicking off, I found myself spending the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally unsure.
What did I discover from this experience? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaking events and chances to connect with people. Most crucially, I understood that if there’s one thing to be, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels and an even steeper incline from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind. However, one aspect that aided me in persevering was the knowledge that everyone else is grappling with similar issues. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s highly likely that others are feeling just as perplexed. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is possibly the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty when you find yourself needing help.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the instructors within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and fully understand the challenges students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. While I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s outset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty on a deeper level, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway from this experience is to fully utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
### Final Thoughts
In general, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support systems provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance enjoying myself with the unavoidable pressures stemming from exams and deadlines.
In conclusion, my inaugural year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a transformative journey. I’ve developed both academically and personally, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead.
