### My Journey in Securing Accommodation in London
*Authored by Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*
Recently, I celebrated nine months since my relocation to London. Although this may not appear to be an extended period, I have accumulated a wealth of insights during this time. London thrives as a vibrant metropolis, characterized not only by its diverse accommodation alternatives but also by the multicultural communities that inhabit it. For students, there is an abundance of housing options available. Both student-focused residences and private accommodations provide choices such as ensuite and shared bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio flats, and house shares.
For students based in the UK, arranging an apartment viewing is quite simple. On the other hand, international students can leverage websites like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to virtually check out various living options. These platforms supply valuable information on amenities, closeness to public transportation, and other crucial details to assist students in making well-informed choices.
As I embarked on my search for a place to reside, my focus was on securing a room in Central London. I aimed to remain in close proximity to significant attractions, social hotspots, and, most importantly, the campus of Imperial College. The city is organized into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The city boasts an excellent public transportation network—including the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—making it effortless to navigate between different zones. Nevertheless, traveling between zones can be pricey, with daily costs reaching as high as £5.25. To economize, I opted to walk shorter distances rather than always using public transport. For longer journeys, I discovered that using an Oyster card greatly diminished transportation expenses.
In addition to the Underground, London Overground and National Rail services extend to regions beyond the central zones. While these services offer convenience, fares fluctuate based on travel distance and the specific train operator.
Residing in Central London brings its advantages, but it also entails increased living costs. To keep expenses manageable, I chose to share a room with a friend who was also studying at university. This arrangement allowed us to save substantially on rent. I opted for intercollegiate student accommodations, as I wanted to connect with peers from varied backgrounds and similar age ranges—a combination that’s often difficult to find in private housing.
Being near grocery stores was another crucial consideration for me. Well-known supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are commonly found, while budget-friendly retailers like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland provide more economical options. Living close to essential shopping venues, including pharmacies, turned out to be a time-saver, especially during hectic exam seasons.
Selecting the ideal neighborhood in London can be daunting. The city’s ethnic communities play a fundamental role in its cultural tapestry, providing a harmonious mix of traditions and experiences. Numerous international students tend to gravitate toward regions that resonate with the culture of their home nations. For instance, Southall in West London boasts a sizable South Asian population, home to Indian dining establishments, grocery retailers, and traditional clothing boutiques. Brixton, located in South London, is renowned for its Afro-Caribbean heritage and lively music scene. In contrast, Chinatown in the West End serves as a bustling center of Chinese eateries, shops, and cultural activities. These neighborhoods exemplify just a fraction of London’s varied community enclaves.
Ultimately, the most suitable area to reside in London hinges on your personal tastes and priorities. Whether you are attracted to the city’s cultural wealth, its convenience, or its lively social atmosphere, London presents something for everyone. Embrace the myriad accommodation choices available, discover its distinctive neighborhoods, and fully enjoy your experience in this magnificent city.
