**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what the future would hold. I was about to start my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can appreciate how life-changing this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment? Taking small actions to reach out to others. A simple chat with someone in a similar situation led to bonds that now feel like a second family. What I’ve understood is that taking that first step—regardless of how intimidating it seems—is invaluable. And if you aren’t ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine! Universities, including Imperial, offer numerous icebreaker activities and occasions to connect with others.
Most importantly, I learned to embrace my true self. In such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your competence when you observe others studying and succeeding.
What supported me was recognizing that I wasn’t alone in this. Everyone else was navigating similar difficulties, and if I struggled to grasp something, it was likely that others did too. The core message here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or teaching staff, reaching out can significantly improve your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, I must highlight how remarkable the Materials department at Imperial is. The faculty and tutors genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They foster open lines of communication throughout the year and are always willing to provide support.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. Becoming a well-being representative allowed me to build connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My suggestion? Utilize the resources and support systems accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Key Takeaways
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to the realization that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has shown me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and connection.
Ultimately, university is about more than just academics. It’s a voyage of personal development, resilience, and forging lasting relationships. If you’re on the cusp of your own journey, welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember to savor the journey.
