**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainties about what awaited me. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was not a situation I was familiar with. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and moments that I will cherish forever. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One daunting challenge I encountered early in my journey was the task of making friends. Entering university can be overwhelming, and if you happen to be a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On the very first day at my student accommodation, merely days before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day cloistered in my room, too timid to step outside and meet new people.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have transformed into a second family, and all it required was nudging myself out of my comfort zone and initiating small dialogues with others who shared my sentiments.
What was the takeaway? Making that initial move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker occasions and chances to mingle with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a rich tapestry of individuals enrolled in the course and at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your vibe.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another significant hurdle was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the heightening complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second term presented even more difficulties. It’s easy to become inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and excelling.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar trials. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the academic staff. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely strive for your success and are aware of the student challenges. They are friendly, understanding, and maintain a channel of open communication throughout the year to address any issues.
I confess I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early in my journey, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to develop connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
In looking back on this year, I’ve discovered that much of the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and throughout the year—was often unfounded. A wealth of assistance is available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate various obstacles.
This year has demonstrated that I am never truly alone, even in moments of uncertainty. It has shown me how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with opportunities for joy and enjoyment. Most importantly, it has been a year of development, confirming that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to remarkable rewards.
If you’re about to embark on your own university path, rest assured that it’s natural to feel anxious. Welcome the challenges, lean on the support around you, and remember to savor the journey.
