**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was a formidable challenge. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been filled with obstacles, but also significant personal development, knowledge, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar feelings. On my first day at my student accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The breakthrough moment arrived when I decided to take a slight risk and engage in informal chats with individuals who were feeling just as unsure as I was. With time, these exchanges evolved into lasting friendships, and I’ve discovered a second family during my time at Imperial. My greatest lesson? Take that initial step early. Even if you aren’t comfortable or ready at the start, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Acclimating to the academic demands and the intricacy of the material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities amidst a group of high achievers.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that we’re all experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The most crucial lesson I gleaned from my first year was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Don’t be afraid to reach out; teamwork and encouragement are vital in tackling academic obstacles.

### The Supportive Faculty in Materials
One exceptional feature of my first year was the remarkable support from the staff within the Materials department. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and offered a variety of support.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral help until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. Assuming the position of a year well-being representative was another leap I embraced early on, which turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which was invaluable. Engaging with staff, through both formal roles and informal encounters, is one of the best actions you can take for your well-being. My recommendation? Make the most of the resources and assistance at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I realize that many of the fears and worries I experienced—both prior to and during my university life—were baseless. Thanks to the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, there’s no need to face difficulties in isolation. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s possible to juggle academic demands with enjoyment and self-discovery.

As I progress onward, I’m thankful for the teachings, friendships, and experiences that have shaped my journey over the past year. For anyone gearing up to start their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, embrace the hurdles, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
