**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the journey that awaited me. I was on the cusp of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a fresh and overwhelming scenario felt difficult. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I can appreciate the growth I’ve achieved, the obstacles I’ve surmounted, and the enjoyment I’ve experienced throughout the journey. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current state?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

Making friends was one of the most daunting elements of starting university. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my very first day in student housing, a few days prior to the onset of classes, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. At Imperial, especially within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were navigating the same experience as me.

The most important lesson I gained? Take that leap of faith at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel ready or comfortable at once, there will be abundant icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the intricacies of the subject matter. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-performing peers.

What assisted me during this time was recognizing that everyone is encountering the same challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Regarding assistance, the staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in the success of students and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Early in the term, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with staff members. Building relationships with the faculty is immensely beneficial, and there are numerous opportunities to do so. My recommendation? Make the most of the support available—it’s designed to help you excel.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a path of growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. If you are about to begin your own university journey, keep in mind to take that leap, reach out for help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
