**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been quiet and introverted, diving into this experience was quite outside my comfort zone. Now that I reflect on a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and lots of enjoyable moments, I can appreciate all that I’ve learned and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of my greatest challenges as I began university was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate to these feelings. On my first day at student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and connect with others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment came when I chose to take a chance and initiate conversations with others who were in similar situations. Gradually, I created a second family at Imperial, both within my course and throughout the wider university community. What I discovered is this: taking that initial step is always worthwhile, even when it feels daunting. If you’re not ready to engage right away, that’s okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to connect with others who share your passions and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic workload at university. The leap from A-levels to university-level coursework was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving colleagues.

What aided me during these times was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t click for you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The key is to reach out for assistance—be it from your classmates or the faculty. Learning how to seek support is arguably one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department has been exceptional. They truly care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication with us and offered numerous forms of guidance and support.

I didn’t fully take advantage of this support system until later on, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members and acquire significant insights into the department’s workings. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, building connections with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly beneficial. My recommendation? Make the most of all the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I have realized that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was mostly unfounded. With the backing of staff, peers, and the broader Imperial community, I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone. I’ve also learned to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while carving out time for enjoyment and relaxation.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those courageous steps, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ll develop in ways you never expected, and you might just experience the most exciting time of your life along the journey.
