**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and doubt about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been a bit introverted and reserved, plunging into university life seemed intimidating. However, reflecting on this past year, I recognize a time of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most anxiety-inducing obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day settling into my student residence, just days before classes began, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a little small talk with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.

So, what did I realize? It’s always worthwhile to take that first step. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t worry! There are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, just be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to meet those who reflect your interests and values.

### Overcoming the Academic Hurdle

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more significant. Being thrust into this new environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging. But here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, chances are, others are grappling with it too.

The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to hone during your first year. Whether from your classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is essential.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I must highlight that the instructors within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the academic year, and I wish I had engaged with it sooner.

At the start of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which has been immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to establish relationships with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. With abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve recognized that I’m never truly alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable stress of examinations and deadlines.
