**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Diving into the unknown wasn’t exactly what my typically shy and reserved self was used to. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment. So, what precisely has this year imparted to me, and where do I find myself today?
### Forming Friendships: Conquering the Initial Major Challenge
One of the most anxiety-inducing difficulties I encountered was making friends. This is frequently among the most intimidating elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be a concern for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days ahead of the term commencing—I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known, both within my course and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. All it required was a little small talk with individuals who were experiencing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you’re unsure or uncomfortable, don’t stress! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and opportunities to mingle with others. Most importantly, I discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Challenges
Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence. You might observe others studying and feel inadequate.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson from your first year. Reach out to your peers or faculty for guidance.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see you thrive and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they kept in consistent contact with us regarding any concerns we faced. Although I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, I wish I had accessed them sooner.
At the year’s start, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty more meaningfully, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can turn out to be one of the best decisions you make for yourself. My main lesson from this experience is to seize the support that’s available. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the vast range of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated. Most importantly, I uncovered how to balance having fun with the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
