**Looking Back on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my usually shy and reserved personality was used to. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a time filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did I gain from this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect can often be one of the most intimidating parts of starting university, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On the day I moved into my accommodation, mere days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like my second family here at Imperial. All it took was some casual conversation with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as I was.
So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that it’s always beneficial to take that initial step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of ice-breakers and events designed to help you bond with others. Above all, I learned that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a situation can easily undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind. However, a helpful reminder was that everyone is collectively experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, I can almost assure you others are finding it challenging too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to request assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to take away from your first year—seek help from both your peers and the staff without hesitation!
On the topic of staff, I must highlight how remarkable the Materials department personnel are. They genuinely care about your success and understand that students encounter obstacles. They relate to us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I wish I had accessed it sooner. Early in the year, I took a significant step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to better connect with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and making those connections is one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My essential takeaway is to fully leverage the support available to you—you can’t have too much assistance.
All in all, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced, both prior to and during university, was often unwarranted. Numerous support systems are in place, ranging from staff to fellow students, to help you tackle any obstacles. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered how to find joy even when facing pressures like exams and deadlines.
