**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainties as I prepared to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For an individual who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new phase was intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been a period of transformation—rich with personal development, obstacles, and innumerable joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here—friends who have become like a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It all began with small, initial steps, like engaging in light conversation with others who were equally anxious. The most significant lesson I learned is that it’s worthwhile to take a chance early on. If you don’t feel ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and avenues to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic rigors of university was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more intense. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and worrying if you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in managing these challenges was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone is facing similar struggles, and if you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering direction.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of my best decisions. It enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors is one of the smartest decisions you can make. My most important takeaway? Make use of the resources and support systems accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundant support from faculty and peers, those worries became manageable. This year has taught me that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic challenges with moments of enjoyment and fun.
As I contemplate the next phase of my university experience, I am thankful for the insights and experiences gained over the past year. To anyone about to begin their own university journey: welcome the challenges, rely on the support around you, and remember to savor the adventure!
